How to Choose the Right Generator For Your Project

How to Choose the Right Generator For your Project?

The generator is so common in construction job sites to generate sufficient energy to execute the work. That creates a strong demand in the generator rental business within the construction industry.

Selecting the right generator should be a balancing act. You will need adequate electricity to power your equipment arsenal, with greater output required to run large appliances or multiple tools simultaneously, but not undersize or oversize. Under sizing of generator will prone to unexpected shutdowns because of overloading. Meanwhile oversizing, running low load will lead to higher fuel consumption and harmful to the generator engine.

What is Generator?

Today, we will share with you few steps to choose the right generator for your project.

1. Determine the capacity of the required Genset

Remember 10KVa = 10,000Watts

Generator size is commonly categorized by KVa, from a few KVA up to more than 1500 KVA.

To choose the right KVA of generator you must have proper power planning.

  1. Determine the list of your tools or equipment that will be powered.
  2. Added up all tools and equipment Watts. You can find the figure from the data label or specification.
  3. Include an estimated 15% allowance capacity of total Watts in step b, and you should be able to choose the right size of the generator.

Example:

Like the above example, you should look for a 5KVa generator.

2. Check for noise requirement

Generators generate different levels of decibel during operation depend on different types, brands, and models. In some project sites near schools, libraries, or residential areas, there may have strict requirements on the noise level. Refer to the example of the generator specification sheet, you can easily check the sound level. Usually, the sound was measured at 7m way of the radius of the Genset.

By doing this simple exercise, you should know very clear which generator will satisfy the decibel requirement of your project site.

3. Choose the Fuel Source

There is a different type of fuel source available for portable generators such as Diesel, Gasoline, or even battery generator. However, the most common generator in Singapore is comprised of Diesel type. Especially for construction project use, Diesel is the best option for its durability and performance. For the fuel source, most likely you won’t be able to have another kind of option in the Singapore market.

4. Space of Generator Location

You should ensure the site has sufficient space to fit the Genset that you selected. It shall have good ventilation to prevent the accumulation of hazardous gases. For long-term usage, it is also strongly recommended to build a shelter to protect the Genset from rain, even though some generators may be classified as weatherproof.

After going through the 4 steps as above, you should be able to find the right and accurate model and type of Genset for your project. We hope the article could provide you a good guide to select the right generator for your project site.
